Ocean County, NJ- On November 19, students from the Marine Service Technology program at Ocean County Vocational Technical School (OCVTS) had the unique opportunity to tour the renowned Viking Yacht Center in New Gretna, New Jersey. The visit offered an immersive experience into the intricate craftsmanship behind building luxury sport fishing yachts.

During the tour, students explored several key departments, including welding, paint and prep, cabinetmaking, woodworking, fiberglass production, and the assembly line where these impressive vessels come to life. One highlight of the day was stepping aboard an 82-foot yacht to admire the finished product, complete with a salon, galley, heads, engine room, bunks, and staterooms. Students also visited the docks to observe boats being prepared for delivery, including installations of towers and advanced electronics.

This enriching experience was made possible through OCVTS’s strong partnership with Viking Yacht Marine Group. For years, Viking Yacht has been a valuable ally in advancing career and technical education (CTE) in Ocean County. Industry partnerships like this are vital to ensuring that CTE programs remain dynamic and relevant. By collaborating with industry leaders, OCVTS aligns its curriculum with the skills and standards demanded by the workforce, empowering students with hands-on training and career-ready expertise.

Viking Yacht’s commitment to supporting career and technical education extends beyond tours and facility access; the company has also played a pivotal role in employing OCVTS graduates. For instance, Evan Bahrle, a 2012 alumnus of the Welding Technology program, has built a thriving career at Viking Yachts over the past 11 years. Now a head supervisor overseeing the Welding, Machining, and Powder Coating departments, Evan exemplifies how technical education can open doors to long-term success. Additionally, two other OCVTS alumni are currently employed across various Viking Yacht departments, further highlighting the impact of this enduring partnership.

Through collaborations with industry leaders like Viking Yacht Marine Group, OCVTS continues to bridge the gap between education and industry, inspiring the next generation of skilled professionals and strengthening the local workforce.
