Technical Preparation Agreement ( Earn College Credits )
14 OCVTS programs provide opportunities to earn college credit through advanced coursework.
Ocean County Vocational Technical School has established ‘Tech Prep’ Agreements with over 20 colleges, universities and technical institutes which allow students to earn college credits for the work they complete in their training program. Tech Prep is short for “Technical Preparation.” It is nationally recognized program which focuses on providing meaningful education and career preparation for a large number of high school students, whose immediate goals following high school include additional advanced education. The Ocean County Vocational Technical School has embraced the Tech Prep philosophy, expanding it to include both full and part-time programs. This gives the student a jump start on a college education and prevents the duplication of course work at the college level.
What is Tech Prep?
Tech Prep is short for "Technical Preparation." It is a nationally recognized program which focuses on providing a meaningful education and career preparation for a large number of high school students whose immediate educational goals following high school include an associate degree at a community college or Post High School institution.
Tech Prep education is a significant innovation in the education reform movement in the United States. It was given a major emphasis on the Carl D. Perkins Vocational and Applied Technology Education Act of 1990 and was amended in the School to Work Opportunities Act of 1994.
Tech Prep is a planned program in a technical field beginning in high school. The program extends through post-secondary education or an apprenticeship program of following high, and ends in an associate degree or certificate.
Tech Prep is an important school-to-work transition strategy, helping students make the connection between school and employment.
Positive benefits for students include:
- An Associate Degree or a Two-Year Certificate
- Competence in Math, Science, and Communications
- Technical Preparation in a Selected Field
Participation in a Tech Prep program may address drop-out prevention, help students transition to four-year baccalaureate programs and lead to effective employment placement.
The Ocean County Vocational Technical School has embraced the Tech Prep philosophy, expanding it to include both full and part-time programs. Agreements are in place with many institutions allowing students the opportunity to earn college credits. This gives students a jump start on a college education and may prevent the duplication of course work at the college level.
