Student life at MATES  is incredibly supportive.  Our teachers develop caring relationships with our students, allowing for the adaptation of curricula to meet the social, emotional and educational needs of everyone. Our student experience is enriched by student clubs, organizations, and volunteer opportunities.

ADMISSIONS

MATES is a competitive program offered through the Ocean County Vocational Technical School (OCVTS) that accepts applications from eighth-grade students who are considered residents of Ocean County.  There are three information sessions in the fall and all inquiries about MATES are handled through our OCVTS admissions office only.

ABOUT MATES

The Marine Academy of Technology and Environmental Science (MATES), Ocean County's premier STEAM school, has been designed to provide its students with a rigorous academic curriculum with concentration in the areas of science, technology, arts, and math. MATES provides a unique and challenging hands-on learning experience in an enriched STEAM learning environment.  Extensive field work, independent research, work-based learning experiences, and STEAM-based partnerships offer students opportunities to explore numerous career fields. 100% of the Class of 2024 were accepted to top colleges and universities around the country. In addition to marine and environmental majors, 2024 graduates are studying in the fields of engineering, computer science, math, and medicine.

MATES is a specialized high school developed around the marine and environmental science theme. MATES is geared toward students who wish to concentrate their studies in the STEM areas. ( math and science)

The  Mission of MATES

The mission of the Marine Academy of Technology and Environmental Science (MATES) is to provide an opportunity to students in Ocean County to become critical thinkers and problem solvers. Students of this academy will participate in an intimate, integrated, and challenging curriculum with a focus on marine and environmental science. MATES will empower its students with skills important to post-secondary study and employment in a global community.

School Background

MATES is one of the career academies administered by the Ocean County Vocational Technical School District (OCVTS). Opened in September 2001, the school exists within the community to provide a unique, nurturing and challenging hands-on learning experience for college-bound and career-oriented students interested in pursuing a math or science-related field. MATES has been designed to give its students a rigorous academic curriculum with a concentration in the areas of math, science, and technology. The OCVTS School District is responsible for recruitment, admissions, and the instructional program. There are over 23,000 high school students enrolled in Ocean County Public Schools. MATES is a competitive, specialized high school that selects its students from applicants found within the public and private schools of Ocean County.

MATES Admissions

Student Selection & Admissions

Students are selected through a competitive application process and enter at the ninth-grade level. Applicants must reside in Ocean County to be eligible for admission. All school districts in Ocean County are eligible to participate in sending applications to the program.
