VIKING YACHTS COMPANY DONATION INSPIRES OCEAN COUNTY VOCATIONAL TECHNICAL SCHOOL STUDENTS
The generous donation of walnut and teak plywood has been put to good use by students in the OCVTS Custom Woodworking and Design Program.

OCEAN COUNTY, NEW JERSEY -Viking Yachts Company, of New Gretna, New Jersey has been a community partner and strong supporter of Ocean County Vocational Technical School for many years. The custom yacht company provides employment and mentoring opportunities as well as tours of its renowned manufacturing facility to OCVTS students. Michael Donohue, Viking Yachts Human Resources Manager is an OCVTS graduate and now serves on the Ocean County Foundation for Vocational Technical Education.

Recently OCVTS accepted a donation of large quantity (400-500 sheets) of walnut and teak plywood. The 4x8 sheets range from ¼” to ¾ inch thick. Wood materials ordered for each custom sport fishing or cruising yacht are matched and numbered to ensure the highest quality finished product. Any leftover materials cannot be used on another build because the sheets’ grain patterns and color may vary so the stock of leftover wood panels was delivered to the OCVTS Custom Woodworking and Design Program in the Jackson Center.

Since delivery, the wood products have been utilized in many projects ranging from coffee tables, cabinets, and desks as well as the construction of massive, elaborate set designs for the OCVTS Performing Arts Academy’s musical productions, including ‘Sister Act’ and “Disney’s Beauty and the Beast’. Donations such as this provide valuable resources in the workshop, expand students’ knowledge of materials not readily available to them and inspire creativity.
