Ocean County Vocational Technical School- Helping to Restore the Shore! Students Help Restore Bay Head Reading Center
    Jean Sullivian, March 5, 2013

Students from the Ocean County Vocational Technical School's Building Construction Technology Program work to restore the Bay Head Reading Center damaged by Superstorm Sandy. Once construction is complete, efforts can focus on preparing the center to re-open.

BAY HEAD, NEW JERSEY Four months have passed and Ocean County continues the daunting task of rebuilding in the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy. With budgets stretched to their last dollars and resources scarce, Mayor William W. Curtis of the Borough of Bay Head turned to Ocean County Vocational Technical School for assistance in restoring the Ocean County Library, Bay Head Reading Center, located on Meadow Avenue. Just blocks from the water's edge, the Reading Center sustained major damage when it was inundated with about 2 feet of water.

Students from the Building Construction Technology Program from the OCVTS Brick Center have been working all week at the Reading Center, replacing insulation, installing new sheetrock as well as taping and spackling. Instructor Mark Muraczewski said the students were excited about the project. "It's a chance to take what we learn in the class and put it to use in the real world. It's a great opportunity to help the community."

Materials for the restoration of the 4,000 square foot building were supplied by Bay Head and the students are using their skills to leave a lasting legacy of community spirit and perseverance in the wake of the unprecedented devastation.
