    It was a record-setting day for Ocean County Vocational Technical School (OCVTS) students at the New Jersey SkillsUSA Championships held recently in Somerset, New Jersey. SkillsUSA is a nationwide partnership of students, teachers and industry working together to ensure the future of America's skilled workforce. Participation helps students discover and develop their career passions. The organization emphasizes respect for the dignity of work, ethics, workmanship, scholarship and safety.

    One hundred and seventy-five OCVTS students traveled to Somerset and competed in over 52 different events. This level of competition included over 1,500 high school students and post-secondary (PS) students from all across the state of New Jersey, who had qualified at earlier regional contests. At the awards ceremony held Saturday evening, medals were presented to Saturday's competitors, as well as finalists in events held earlier in 2013. OCVTS students received an astounding 74 medals overall; 30 gold, 32 silver and 12 bronze.

    "These students are demonstrating more than just their skills; they are proving that our workforce is prepared to lead the way in every technical area our country needs to maintain a strong global economic presence," said Peter Carey, state director for SkillsUSA.
