OCVTS Ceremony Caps Off Nursing Milestone
Jean Sullivian, March 31, 2011
TOMS RIVER, NEW JERSEY - Seventy-five Practical Nursing students at Ocean County Vocational Technical School (OCVTS) reached a milestone this past week. The students received the traditional nurse’s cap at a ceremony which recognized the achievements and accomplishments in completing the first half of the intense and comprehensive nursing program. The students have successfully completed Anatomy & Physiology, Pharmacology, Medical Surgical Nursing and Fundamentals. They will now continue on to specialty rotations including Obstetrics, Pediatrics and Psychiatric Nursing at local health facilities.
The OCVTS Practical Nursing Program was the first program offered at OCVTS and began in 1959. It is approved by the New Jersey Board of Nursing and the Department of Education. The program, located at the OCVTS Toms River Center, has a very competitive admissions process and class sizes are limited. It is the largest vocational technical-based nursing program in New Jersey.
Forty percent of the program is devoted to classroom theory and laboratory. The remaining time is devoted to clinical experience, a vital part of training.
OCVTS has established agreements with over a dozen local hospitals and health care facilities which provide valuable opportunities for students to gain experience and apply classroom theory. The clinical rotations also provide networking opportunities for employment after graduation.
Graduation is scheduled for July. At that time students will be prepared to take the New Jersey Board of Licensing Exam for qualification as a Licensed Practical Nurse. A practical nurse is trained to care for acute, subacute, convalescent and chronically ill patients under the direction of a registered nurse and/or licensed physician.
Last year, OCVTS nursing graduates attained a 97.14% pass rate for the NJ Board of Nursing Licensure Exam, surpassing both the state and national average pass rate. For more information about the Practical Nursing program at OCVTS visit www.ocvts.org or call 732.473.3100 extension 3137.
