Students Learn About Flying from the Ground Up
Jay Savage, OCVTS Aviation/Aerospace Technology Student, January 23, 2009

On January 22, 2009 the OCVTS Aviation Aerospace Technology class went on a field trip to Air-Mods & Repair in Trenton-Robbinsville, NJ. During the trip students learned many duties of an aircraft mechanic and a private pilot. Some of those tasks were aircraft refueling, procedures of aircraft tie down, Pre-Flight check of a Mooney aircraft, and a FOD (Foreign Object Debris) walk on the tarmac and taxiway. The students were also lucky enough to witness a low-pass test flight of a Mooney M20F aircraft. The low-pass left smiles on students faces as it passed by at 300 hundred miles per hour and only 15 feet above the ground.

In the repair shop students learned how to jack and move an aircraft properly and also analyzed the mechanics of retractable landing gear. On the other side of the shop, students observed a mechanic blind riveting a flap assembly. Krystal Starr, a student at OCVTS, demonstrated how to use a rivet gun and the safety procedures that follow with it.

The last segment of the trip students had a discussion with Lisa Campbell, who is the Director of Flight Operations. Lisa spoke about the benefits of the Civil Air patrol and what steps to take to become a private pilot. In all, the students had a remarkable experience and are interested in pursuing opportunities for flight time at Air-Mods & Repair in Trenton-Robbinsville, NJ.
