    Jean Sullivian, October 16, 2009

OCEAN COUNTY, NEW JERSEY- This school year begins Ocean County Vocational Technical School (OCVTS) marks the fiftieth year of providing superior career training to the residents of Ocean County. OCVTS opened its doors in 1959, offering the Licensed Practical Nursing program in a small converted supermarket building in downtown Toms River. Over the past five decades the district has grown by leaps and bounds and now offers over forty career programs at six campuses throughout the county.

As part of the ongoing celebration of the 50th anniversary, a ceremony was held at the OCVTS Jackson Center to open the time capsule sealed during the building dedication in October 1972. Prior to the October OCVTS Board of Education meeting, board members and guests reflected on the district’s long distinguished history. The copper box sealed within the building’s cornerstone contained photos of the construction and publications which provided a unique insight in to the employment and social trends of that time period. “We can see how far we have come as a district and as a society in the past fifty year. We can only imagine what the next fifty years will bring,” commented Board President Nina Anuario.

On hand to open the time capsule were, from left to right: OCVTS Board of Education Vice President Joseph Harding; Board Member Stephen Scaturro; OCVTS Superintendent William P. Hoey, Board President Nina Anuario; Board Member Dr. Dennis Cirrone; William Henry, who as the Director of OCVTS in 1972 was present at the dedication ceremony when the time capsule was originally placed in the cornerstone; and former OCVTS Superintendent Dr. Frederick Felice.
