FOOD FOR THOUGHT - Supermarket Grand Opening

Students from the Retail Store Operations/Marketing program at Ocean County Vocational Technical School (OCVTS) are gaining valuable on-the-job training in the ‘Surf’s Up Food Market’, located in the OCVTS Brick Center on Chambers Bridge Road. This Special Needs program is designed to introduce and strengthen students’ knowledge of workplace readiness skills in retail. Since the beginning of the school year students have been learning the basics of retail food operations from start to finish. Skills include merchandise stocking and inventory; store maintenance, and front end operations such as cashiering and customer service
Retail Store Operations Instructor Laurie O’Donnell explains, “The students are assigned tasks at different work stations. Students will spend time at each station throughout the year. They gain real-world work experience and they also develop strengths in team skills.”
Teacher Assistant Tara Lewis adds that “this program provides good work ethics and strong employability skills which are so important to success in the workplace.”
Last week the students celebrated the grand opening of the food market which is open to the public during school hours.
The market is stocked with non-perishable food items and household supplies. Students from other Brick Center programs can grab a quick snack like hot pretzels or fruit smoothie during a classroom break. The market abides by school nutritional guidelines and serves low fat food items
The market is stocked by donations from area businesses such as Wakefern , Perlmart and Wawa. These companies also provide job opportunities for the students.
“We encourage the public to stop in and shop. The students learn from every customer.” says Ms. O’Donnell.
The Surf’s Up Market is open from 9:00-9:45AM and 12:00-12:45PM, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Purchases are by cash only and the store cannot accept coupons. Visitors must sign in at the school’s front office. For more information call 732.286.5670
