TOMS RIVER – A student in the Marine Academy of Technology and Environmental Science (MATES), was selected as a nominee for the national Wendy’s High School Heisman Award. MATES is a full-time high school division of the Ocean County Vocational Technical School.
Nicole was nominated for the recognition by MATES Vice Principal Peg Roma based on the student’s “academic aptitude, athletic talent and exceptional commitment to her community.”

The Student has served as student government president and is a member of the National Honor Society. While a full-time MATES student, She is a member of the varsity swim team at Southern Regional High School and has earned varsity letters since her freshman year. The student is involved in various environmental projects. She volunteered for grass planting and joined teams in the clean ups of rivers and beaches. She also has served as a nursing home volunteer. This past summer she studied Marine Resource and Park Management in the Caribbean islands of Turks and Caicos. The project was sponsored by Boston University’s program, The School for Field Studies.

“We believe it’s important to celebrate success in all facets of life,” said Ms. Roma.
“The Wendy’s High School Heisman showcases the diverse achievements of students,” she added.
Created in 1994 through a partnership between Wendy’s and the Heisman Memorial Trophy, the program annually rewards youth excellence.
